For many downsizers, close proximity to local amenities and easily maintainable properties are key considerations when choosing a smaller home. For HR consultant Jill White, 61, Millwood Designer Homes’ development Cherry Tree Lane in the quaint Surrey village of Ewhurst proved to be the perfect place to downsize to. With a selection of low maintenance premium new build homes, all within close proximity to local the village and the Surrey Hills AONB, Jill found exactly what she was looking for

Jill moved into a brand new two bedroom end of terrace home at Cherry Tree Lane after selling her family home and temporarily renting a three bedroom cottage a short distance away in Gomshall. She explains, “I was looking to buy a smaller house after renting for a while in Gomshall. I really wanted to buy a two bedroom property and decided to look at new builds because they are so convenient for people that live on their own, like me. I figured that they would be much lower maintenance and better insulated, which would mean my utility bills would be reduced. When I viewed the show home at Cherry Tree Lane, I fell in love with the development straight away and just knew that I had to live there. I reserved my house when it was just a shell, to make sure I could definitely get the house I wanted.

“I love the feel at Cherry Tree Lane; the amount of space on the development is great, nothing is too close together and it doesn’t feel like a new build development at all really, it feels like its own little village. I knew I wanted to stay in Surrey, as there’s so much in the local area that I just love. I adore living within the Surrey Hills; it’s just perfect. I’ve got a Cocker Spaniel, and it’s been amazing having lots of countryside on my doorstep during the lockdown, as I’ve been able to keep going on regular walks with him. There are so many wonderful walks and places to explore close by – I just absolutely love it!

“I’m also really enjoying the close community atmosphere in Ewhurst. The village isn’t too big so it still feels really friendly and everyone knows each other. Cranleigh is also nearby, which has a wide range of shops as well as a doctor’s surgery and a dentist.”

After selling her family home last year, like many downsizers Jill was able to purchase her smaller home as a cash buyer, meaning she now lives mortgage-free. She said, “When I sold the four bedroom family home, a lot of equity was released. This helped me pay the rent whilst I was looking for a smaller home, and it has meant I can now live mortgage-free in my new home, so I have more money to spend on what I want, rather than bills!

“I’m really looking forward to making my garden look perfect. I bought an end of terrace home so that I could have a little bit more privacy, and a little bit more garden to enjoy. Since moving in, I’ve been adding to the garden to make it pretty. I’ve already added some bamboo shoots to create a secluded area of the garden. My garden is partially walled to the left and back, so I’m currently adding some decoration to the walls. It’s really starting to come together, and I’m so pleased with it!”
