ONLINE AT: Mall Galleries – ROI Annual Exhibition

Painting the home has long been an enduring theme in the history of oil painting, from Vermeer’s quiet depictions of Dutch domestic life, to Edward Hopper’s intriguing portrayals of figures in rooms and windows, to Cézanne’s explorations of domestic still lifes, each artist portrays the beauty ordinary life and immortalises a moment in time. This winter, the Royal Institute of Oil Painters (ROI,) invites visitors to its Annual Exhibition to explore how today’s master oil painters capture the theme of home, with work allowing us to peak inside quintessentially British country homes, snoop around artists’ own private spaces and soak up the diverse interior design styles of the day.The ROI Annual Exhibition at Mall Galleries in London will present more than 300 oil paintings by leading institute members and by emerging talent. This prestigious annual showcase exhibits oil paintings of the very highest standard, with artists able to interpret the HOME theme with masterly depictions of surface, colour, light, composition and atmosphere. The exhibition includes a selection of work capturing the aesthetic beauty of our homes and their interiors, and also how they shape comfort, identity and family life.

rom light-filled spaces to cosy corners, elegant architectural details to familiar household objects, the exhibition celebrates how artists capture the essence of place and belonging. These works do not simply depict rooms – they explore the atmosphere, textures, and moods that make a house a home.

For those passionate about interiors and home design, the exhibition is both an artistic showcase and an inspiring resource. Oil painting’s ability to render warmth, texture and light makes it uniquely suited to capturing the diverse character and mood of domestic spaces. The works on display will spark ideas for collectors, homeowners, and design enthusiasts alike.

“Home is more than four walls; it’s where we find comfort, identity and memory,” says Adebanji Alade, President of the ROI. “Through their brushstrokes and the artists’ unique viewpoint, the paintings in this year’s exhibition open doors to spaces both familiar and imagined, celebrating what makes our homes so unique.”

Exhibition highlights include:

Works on a Theme: HOME – a collection of work dedicated to interiors, décor, and the idea of home in its many guises. The £500 ROI Themed Painting Prize will be awarded to the most compelling interpretation.

Young Artist Awards – supported by Winsor & Newton, with prizes (£1,000, £600, £400 in art materials) celebrating young oil painters aged 30 and under whose work shows outstanding creativity.
